Art Deco Jewelry
Art Deco jewelry refers to lustrous and stylized ornaments that became popular from the 1920s to 1930s in America and Europe. The term originated from the French Société des artistes décorateurs who displayed the new style at the 1900 Universal Exposition.
General Characteristics
The emphasis is on long geometrical shapes accompanied by sweeping lines. The jewelry is laden with various types of ornaments. Various styles are used, including ancient Egyptian, Asian and Aztec patterns. Many of the designs were also inspired by numerous architectural works. Rings
Rings made in this style typically come on a plain band. The shape would vary; round is the most common but some are square. The band is topped off by large and elaborate stones and metal.
Yellow was a popular color but it was overtaken by platinum and white gold. This was due to the popularity of polished steel which symbolized strength and quiet elegance.
During the 1920s to 30s, these rings became fashionable as engagement rings. The style preferred was one with a square stone in the middle surrounded by numerous small stones. The stones used were either triangular or square.
